Two instances of images in storage. How to avoid this?

While trying to find out why my video does not upload (apparently a PHP setting problem), I realized that images are stored in two instances in "storage/originals". I upload images via the publishing plugin in Lightroom. Originals are 20MP DNG files. I've set in plugin settings that images have to be scaled to 1080px on the short edge. One instance of an image lands on Koken under its original name in the resolution as expected according settings in the plugin. Another instance gets ".1600." attached to the end of the name and is the same image but scaled to 1600px on the long edge. I understand if this was a kind of cache, but it rather looks like a waste of space? Is this a bug or a feature? What should I set to use the server space more effectively?

I use Koken Lightroom plugin 1.2.8 and the "System" section on my server is:

PHP
Version 5.5.18
MySQL
Version 5.5.40-log
Server operating system
SunOS
Webserver software
Apache/2.2.29 (Unix)

ImageMagick 6.7.9
