What's wrong with my video?

Peter van Loon

Oct 01, 2014 05:28PM EDT

Hi,

I've uploaded a full HD 1080 video to a library, but koken doesn't create a thumbnail for it, nor am I able to play the video. See the album http://fotografeer.nl:7100/index.php?/albums/motorcross-circuit-de-belt-video/ . It also includes codec.jpg that displays the used codecs. If I'm not using the correct codec, can you please explain what is wrong. Or can it be the file size of 715 MB (750.587.400 bytes)?

The video runs in VLC, Media Player and on Facebook. I just can't get it to work on Koken. Please help.

Best regards,

Peter van Loon

After further research, the problem turned out to be a mismatch between the file size (715 MB) and the upload file size limit (128 MB).

I updated the upload file size limit in the php.ini file to 1GB (1024M):

upload_max_filesize = 1024M

After pressing the button Settings > System > Clear system caches and restarting Apache, the System page showed:

Upload file size limit 1GB

Now I can upload the large video file, but sofar the thumbnail still isn't created. FFMPEG is installed, as shown by the System page listing:

FFmpeg Installed (Version 1.2.2)

Any other steps I can take to get the thumbnail to work?

I just noticed in the Koken admin: Version 0.18.3 is now available for download.

Should I try this version to see if it improves the thumbnail creation?

Peter – 0.18.3 doesn’t have any updates that would affect this. Can you post your original video file somewhere so I can download and try it on one of our test installs?

Hi Brad,

I temporarily put two files for you to download in http://fotografeer.nl:7100/video . Both fail to produce a video thumbnail on my system.

Large file (> 700 MB): http://fotografeer.nl:7100/video/De%20Belt%2001.mp4
Small file (7 MB): http://fotografeer.nl:7100/video/Mini%20Topgear%20Timelapse.mp4

Please let me know your findings.

Best regards,

Peter van Loon

Hi all,

Since there hasn't been an anwer to this post in quite some time, I decided to do some more research on my own. Koken is running on ReadyNAS 512. The first thing to check is if I can create thumbnails with ffmpeg from the command-line. Turns out I can't. Every conversion to a image format like jpg, png or bmp fails. However I can convert from MP4 to MP3, proving that ffmpeg is enabled and works. Must be something wrong with the ffmpeg setup options. Or maybe I'm missing some codecs? The image ouput formats seem not supported:

"Unable to find a suitable output format for 'gitaar.jpg'"

Any suggestions on how to fixs this are welcome.

Example of conversion to JPG (fails):

# ffmpeg -i gitaar.mp4 -vframes 1 gitaar.jpg
......
Metadata:
handler_name : SoundHandler
[NULL @ 0x642640] Unable to find a suitable output format for 'gitaar.jpg'
gitaar.jpg: Invalid argument

Example of conversion to MP3 (works):

# ffmpeg -i gitaar.mp4 -vframes 500 gitaar.mp3
.....
Stream #0:1(und): Audio: aac (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 62 kb/s
Metadata:
handler_name : SoundHandler
File 'gitaar.mp3' already exists. Overwrite ? [y/N] y
Output #0, mp3, to 'gitaar.mp3':
Metadata:
major_brand : isom
minor_version : 512
compatible_brands: isomiso2avc1mp41
TCON : Guitar
TDRL : 2013
TPE1 : Peter van Loon

Short update: I also created a post on the ffmpeg forum: http://ffmpeg.gusari.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1786

Update:

I upgraded to a newer version of ffmpeg (see http://ffmpeg.gusari.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1786 for details). This one can create the thumbnails. But I put it in a separate directory from the default /usr/bin/ffmpeg. The newer version is located in /root/bin/ffmpeg.

How can I get Koken to use the new /root/bin/ffmpeg?

I manged to solve the problem and Koken is creating the thumbnails now. For a complete set-by-step guide to get Koken on ReadyNAS 512 to create thumbnails, see:
