Max number of items per album?

Sverre Bernhardsen

I'm using the axis 2 theme and have published the following structure of collection sets, collections and albums using the Lightroom Plugin: Years - Events - Disciplines (https://fpfotografie.ch)

This has worked out quite well, but I have two albums consistently showing nothing after having published and I suspect that it may be due to the hight number of items they contain (1467 & 1387, respectively) . Is there some kind of limit set somewhere to the max number of items an album can contain. I have one album with 1142 items and it loads just fine when published, so there seems to be a limit somewhere between 1142 and 1387)

This album contains 1476 items and does not load:
https://fpfotografie.ch/albums/springen-br90-p7/

This album contains 1387 items and does not load either:
https://fpfotografie.ch/albums/springen-br90-p8-2ph/

This album contains 1142 items and loads just fine:
https://fpfotografie.ch/albums/springen-fm2-p5-2ph-1/

Please advise on any limits set in koken, the axis 2 theme or hosting

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi. Yes, you can edit the database directly using phpmyadmin or another tool provided by your hosting compan, to change the url (aka slug) for the album. Change the album name by altering the ###albums row (slug name) and then corresponding entry in ###slugs album name. See:

Hello. Koken sets no limits on the number of images per album. The only limitation is available server resources. In your case the memory limit is 64 MB. This is very low, if possible increase to 128 or 256 MB. That should resolve the problem.

I managed to increase the memory limit to 256MB, but the two albums mentioned still don't load. Anything else I need to do in addition to increasing the memory?

Apparently, the site link of the two albums in question is incorrect and this is the real reason they do not load. I tried editing the site link, but joked said the slug is already in use.

For example:
Site link stored in koken admin console:
https://fpfotografie.ch/albums/springen-br90-p7/
But the album loads with the following site link
https://fpfotografie.ch/albums/springen-br90-p7-1/

This looks at little bit like a catch 22 to me. Is it possible too edit the site link elsewhere?

I did have a look at the slugs with phpmyadmin and it turns out that I was mistaken. The slugs are perfectly ok and do not need to be corrected. Since disciplines are recurring, there will of course be multiple entries with the same name and koken automatically enumerates such entries to keep them apart, like springen-br90-p7, springen-br90-p7-1, etc. In other words, the album site link that was enumerated with a -1 suffix is actually a different album with exactely the same name.

In consequence, I went back to my original idea that there must be some kind of limit on the number of items an album can contain. Since I increased memory from 64 to 256 since publishing the images, I thought it would be useful to clear the image cache and rebuild it, which I did. That allowed me to make an interesting observation on the two albums that do not load properly. Initially, while the cache is still being built, the thumbnails in both albums start loading, but by the time the cache is built, no longer. Could it be that there is some maximum file size for the thumbnail cache. Also, please note that the images in the album display correctly when loaded directly via their site link. Only the thumbnail display of the album does not load when not contains a certain number of items. What I will try to do now is to unpublish photos in the album one by one until the thumbnails load. Then we will know what number of items is the maximum with my current system resources.

I'm coming back to this after having done additional testing. As previously stated, the slugs are good. This was a blind alley. The php memory limit has now been increased to 512MB and I have tried figuring out how many items can be added to an album in my setup without thumbnail page loading breaking. It seems to be around 1283. I started with 1142, which was known to be OK and then added 10 at a time. Then, once album thumbnail page loading started failing, I removed one image at a time and retested.

If no other solution is available, I guess I will have to split large albums into several smaller ones, which will increase administrative overhead, but at least it will work consistently. Any feedback would be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

Hello. If the albums are there, but nav is wrong, then look at the drafts table. Specifically the data and live_data columns they may reference old slugs. That data is somewhat condensed and might be tricky to read, if you want to provide us access to the server we’ll take a look. Hello. Please send us an email from here http://help.koken.me/customer/portal/emails/new with a description of what’s happening. Include the url to your Koken admin page and the email address and password to login to Koken. Also include the credentials necessary to connect to your server via FTP.

The albums are there and the individual pictures can be accessed when using list and slideshow layout, but not beyond a certain number of items in grid layout. So it seems that the theme I'm using (Axis 2) may have a problem with large albums in grid layout. I don't think we need to check the slugs anymore. They seem to be just fine. Let's focus on using the grid layout to display large albums in Axis 2. Anything that can be checked here? They way I understand how the grid works is that it displays a couple of rows at the time and loads a few more when the page is scrolled down. For smaller albums this works fine. For large ones it seems to be a bit buggy. When publishing a large number of items, the grid sometimes show empty instead of loading the first couple of grid rows. It also takes quite some time to show the empty grid, so it could be a timeout of some kind. Could we please investigate from this perspective.

We reproduced the issue and are looking into it.

Two weeks ago, you reported having reproduced the issue that I have been experiencing with albums not loading in the browser when exceeding a certain number of items in the Axis 2 grid view. Have you been able to analyse and understand the problem and is it likely that there will be a fix anytime soon. I guess the issue is not relevant to everyone, but for photographers of sport events it is. Thanks reverting.
