Password protection & Navigation

Martin Kull

I have installed the new Password protection plugin and I have a question on its use:

How could I help my visitors to NAVIGATE to a Private set or album?

I had the impression that this would work the same way as you add any other Public content available in the console by adding a link under SITE, but when trying that there is no reference to Private content?

The idea here is of course that my visitors and clients only need to know my top domain contextphoto.com and their specific password and that they NAVIGATE to their Private area and enter the password rather than having to enter the quirky URL to the specific Private area and then the Password.

The issue seems to be similar to this question: http://help.koken.me/customer/portal/questions/11451250-password-protect-plugin

Ooops... Martin, Rupert - please confirm: I won't be able to password protect PUBLIC albums? Or in other words, protected albums are not visible in the menu?

Agree with Martin. I think the developers need to rethink this. I would want my clients to access a private album through albums.lens and would set the cover photo for that album as a jpeg with the clients name against a black background (especially if its a boudoir shoot) or something similar. Then when they click on the picture it would require a user name and password to load the pictures in album.lens. Not sure why they haven't gone this route.

Real pity if this is not how it works since I will have to stick with zenfolio for private content.

I hope they can "fix" this and I really hope that someone out there will come up with a good plugin for a shopping cart because the underlying CMS is fantastic.

Hi everyone – This is not something that came up among the users who tested the plugin in the beta phase, but obviously is an issue. We are going to take a look at this over the next few days and see what we can come up with.

Reply to Andi: Yes you understood the problem correctly. Right now password protected albums or sets do not show in the menu. Hope the Koken team can fix this!

It is a bit weird that this did not come up during testing. To be able to navigate to password protected content from the top domain is the key functionality in my view. The only thing that the current implementation does is to add the extra security (of a password) to a long and random URL that still can not be navigated to but must be shared over email. That extra layer of security is rarely needed.

Thanks, Martin - in this case I'll wait installing the plugin. You're completely right, to be able to navigate to protected material from top domain is the key functionality. I don't need a plugin that protects content which isn't visible anyway ...

@ Brad: as soon as the plugin can protect any VISIBLE menu links I'll purchase. So I'm looking forward what the next few days will bring. Thanks!

Hey all – After kicking this around a bit, we wanted to get your feedback on a potential solution.

After thinking about it, allowing password protection on public albums presented several issues. In that scenario, a user may unknowingly leave content inside that album public and have that content show in the main content feed or timeline. Plus, it sounds like most of you want the protected albums to be listed separately from the other albums.

So, we landed on a different idea. What if we allowed you to add a link (via Site) to a separate albums index that showed just your password protected albums. Something like this:

proposal

We think this will resolve the issue of discoverability for your end users, while also keeping the implementation of password protected albums simple by keeping the scope limited to private albums only.

Thoughts?

I don't wholly agree with that fix - as many users will want to have unprotected albums listed alongside protected. This fix shuts out that potential methodology.

If the end user could unkowingly do something, the solution to that would be information within the backend to remind them of that potential flaw - I.e. A popup that displays when turning on password protection for the album to notify that not all images in said album are private.

There would also be times that some people may want just one image to not be private as it could be both in their clients album and portfolio album....

However your fix does work for my purposes...

I’m not sure that’s true (the “many” part, anyway), but we’ll see how people respond here. From what I’ve heard so far (we’ve received several emails about this), people mainly want to be able to list their protected albums on a page, like a specific section for clients.

There would also be times that some people may want just one image to not be private as it could be both in their clients album and portfolio album….

Keep in mind this is possible now. You can have a public image that’s a part of a private album as well as other public albums.

Similar opinion here.

I would definitely buy this plugin if password protected albums would be listed as well alongside unprotected ones... and Koken would ask for the plugin only when the client tries to access pictures in its protected album...

Brad, what you are suggesting would go a long way towards satisfying my requirements. I have a number of public sets/albums along with a number of unlisted sets/albums. Ideally, I would put a link on the home page such as "Private Albums" which would take the client to another page that lists all the unlisted sets/albums for all clients. They then click on the one they have the password for and they are in! Nice and simple.

For me I think the suggested solution would work, but not sure I understand the full implications of the proposal. My use case would require:

- A fully PUBLIC portfolio with top navigation categories as today (Cityscape, Landscape, Nature ...About me) - Check.
- A new top navigation category "Clients" that displays multiple albums, one for each Client or project. All albums and all content would be PASSWORD PROTECTED.
- In addition I would like some place on the site for truly private content, i e for my snapshots for family and friends. This would be a PASSWORD PROTECTED set with multiple albums. The link to the Set would be navigatable, but maybe not on top level (No need for Clients and others to see that I also use the site for Private content), e g I would like to have the link to this part BELOW/INSIDE the top level link "About me"

Looking at how SITE and linking works it seems that your proposed solution would meet my requirements except for the last point, where I would like to have a LINK to PASSWORD PROTECTED content under (inside) a top level navigation LINK.

The proposed solution however is a huge step forward, making PASSWORD PROTECTION usable. If it was implemented I guess I would implement it and then create one new password protected top navigation link for clients and another password protected top navigation link for Family & friends since I do not want to mix the two.

First of all, thank you for looking into our needs!

But also from my side, I need the possibility to have both protected and unprotected content on top navigation - just what users Rupert Laycock and Hervé are asking for.
I'm using Koken for private stuff only, family partys, private essays and things like this. So: almost EVERYTHING is protected and the links should be seen (top navigation) as soon as someone visits my site. Like this, everything would be self-describing even for my grandmother ...

Thank you!

The aboved proposal has been integrated into Koken 0.20.4 and Password Protect 1.1.

We’ve also added instructions on using the new feature to our Password Protect guide.

Thanks for the password plugin. Unfortunatly it's not what I was waiting for. I'd simply like a protection applicable to any albums, sets or menus:
e.g. I have public sets with two or more public albums. All public albums or sets should be displayed with a title and a selected image but only some of them should have a password-query after a mouseclick (on mouse up).
And... the Editor of the site is responsible for the dislayed icons on protected albums an sets - it's definitly not the Koken-Team :-)
Thank you very much for upgrading the password plugin with the mentioned options above.

The update is a step forward, sure. But it would be very, very elegant if ANY protected link in the menu would open the password field directly when clicked.
What I still miss: PASSWORD PROTECTION OF ESSAYS! Please provide this option soon, that's a must have!

Thanks

Andi
