Insert content from Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Flickr, and SoundCloud

Essays and Pages created in the Text console can display tweets, photos and videos as easily as pasting an item's page URL onto a new line. Koken will recognize the provider and format the content appropriately. Supported providers at this time include Twitter, Vimeo, Flickr, Hulu, YouTube, Instagram and SoundCloud.

In this document we'll explain in greater detail how to embed these URLs and where to find them.

Note: Please remember to respect creator's rights whenever embedding content from a third party. When in doubt, contact the publisher ahead of time.

Inserting URLs

Press Return while editing an Essay or Page. A new line will appear (see below) with a message to click (to insert media from inside Koken) or start typing. Paste copied URLs into this space. If Koken recognizes the provider it will format the content for you automatically.

Click to insert

Once a URL has been inserted you may click on the element to view a preview of it inside the editor.

Now that you know how URLs are inserted, here's how to find them.

Twitter

There are a variety of ways to obtain a tweet's URL, but we'll show you how using a web browser through Twitter.com. To start, visit the profile page of the user who wrote the tweet. For this example we'll use our own profile page. In the list of tweets, find the one you'd like to display, then click its timestamp. A new page will load for that tweet only. Copy the URL displayed in the browser's address bar.

Instagram

Visit the Instagram profile page for yourself or a friend. For this example we'll use the profile page of our friend Keith Weaver. Click on any of the thumbnails and notice that your browser's address bar URL has changed. This is the URL you want. Copy the URL and paste it into your essay/page.

Flickr

Every photo on Flickr has its own page URL, so thankfully they're pretty easy to find. Simply navigate to the page displaying the photo you want to embed, then copy the URL displayed in your browser's address bar. Paste the URL into your essay/page.

Example URL

Vimeo

Video URLs on Vimeo can be obtained two ways. One is to visit (like Flickr above) the standalone page for the video and copy the URL displayed in your browser's address bar. The second is to click the "SHARE" button (if visible) inside the Vimeo video player. A "Share This Video" window will appear (see below). Copy the URL displayed in the "Link" field. Paste this URL into your essay/page.

YouTube

Visit the standalone page for the YouTube video you want to embed. You may copy the URL displayed in your browser's address bar, or for a more compact URL, click the "Share" link under the video title. A field will appear containing an embeddable URL. Paste this URL into your essay/page.

SoundCloud

All over SoundCloud.com are audio player widgets that enable playback of hosted tracks. Click a player's "Share" button, then copy the URL in the field shown below. Paste this URL into your essay/page.
