Hi Jörg,
In order to secure your site, you should configure this through your hosting service account, probably where you have been setting up your database. I'm a beginner myself, but I got my website secured with a "Let's Encrypt" option on plesk. That may however not be a standard option with all hosting services.
Once you've got your certificate (Let's Encrypt takes about 5 minutes to be operational), you can force SSL access by deleting the corresponding # on your .htaccess file, as following (delete the /admin if you want to force SSL on the whole site) :

#Uncomment the following block to force SSL when accessing /admin
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /admin
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

Hope it helps.
Best regards,
