Essays page Vimeo media now no longer full width

Hans Rupert

Jul 19, 2016 03:22AM EDT

It used to be that when I wrote essays and inserted a link to one of my Vimeo videos, they would span the full width of the essays column. (In Madison 2, this seems to be @ 800px) Now if you have a look, the grey media box spans correctly, but the video view port does not:

The funny thing is that I set a number of my Vimeo videos to a Favorites category, and built a page that looks great:

The Essays page used to look so nice. Now, not so much. Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance,

- Rupert

Rupert, try unchecking “Show text link under this video” in Vimeo. See:

Hello. I saw the not on your latest Essay. Vimeo is setting the size of the thumbnail as 800 X 450 not 853×480 as you expected. See:

That is the most *non-obvious* way to set the parameters on a video that I've ever seen. They must have changed that on Vimeo's side, because I've never set anything there before today.

Thank you for the response and the secret tip!

Okay, thank you again for looking at the source code. I'll go back to Vimeo and see if I can set everything to 800px wide. It sure looks a lot nicer spanning the full width of the blog column. Vimeo must have changed some defaults in the past year, as it hasn't behaved like this before.

Perhaps a tech note or some documentation on this would be helpful to others who have bought the Vimeo importer plugin. I know that I'm very glad to have your expert insight here. Thanks again!

I've just spent the last four (4!) hours trying everything I can to make this work, and relink Vimeo files to my blog (all had worked for the past two years), and I cannot get things to work no matter what I try. Just for giggles, I tried the following test method to make sure I wasn't just crazy: I made "pages" instead of "essay" entries, and inserted the Vimeo content on those pages, and everything works fine – and looks & behaves just as expected too:

But, insert the same Vimeo media in an essay, and they all still look like this:

Good grief – I cannot show my Web site to anybody until this is resolved! (And I've been working hard on adding new content so I could do just that. Argh!)

Please tell me there is a fix somewhere...

Okay, I just posted the possible embed code error bug to Vimeo, and now I'll share the same with you. I don't know who writes the:

'<div class="k-video max-width-video-wrapper" style="max-width: 480px;"><div class="fluid-width-video-wrapper" style="padding-top: 56.25%;"><iframe class="k-custom-source" frameborder="0" title="The cycles of a storm" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" data-src=";assign_tag=0&amp;tags=1&amp;portrait=0&amp;title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;loop=0&amp;color=2f1c51&amp;api=1&amp;player_id=koken_vimeo_912" src=";assign_tag=0&amp;tags=1&amp;portrait=0&amp;title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;loop=0&amp;color=2f1c51&amp;api=1&amp;player_id=koken_vimeo_912" id="fitvid795290"></iframe></div></div>

...but it's certainly not picking up that I set and want the video to display at 800px.

I hope this helps somebody figure out where the bug is.

Thanks in advance,

- Rupert

Here's the response I got from Vimeo, and a link to my new test using their iframe embed code on my Koken Essay entry. Apparently, embedding the iframe code in the Koken page works just fine. Using Koken's Essay tool "insert media" breaks the span/width calls for the Vimeo video.

When can we expect a fix for this, dear Koken Support team? ;)

Hi Rupert,

Great, I'm glad it's working with the embed code! Using the embed code supplied by Vimeo is the best way to ensure that your videos embed properly. It sounds like the issue you're describing is coming from Koken's end. You'll need to contact them for further support.

Hello Vimeo & Koken Support!

I just tried adding the iframe code as suggested by Vimeo to my Koken essays page, and sure enough *that* works:<>

So, it would appear that there is something not quite right with the Koken “insert media” editing/authoring option – at least with regards to Vimeo embeds. And, it’s broken going backwards in time too (that is, at some point my full span embeds that worked before have all stopped displaying correctly) This looks terrible and unprofessional, and I can’t show my site to anyone until it’s fixed!

I will still say the Vimeo UI for editing embed options is practically unusable on OS X / Safari. So there’s that to fix on their end.

Please get back to me on these issues,

- Rupert
