Edit album covers

Edit album covers

Last Updated: Mar 11, 2014 11:51AM EDT

Covers are visual previews of collections. They may be assigned to both albums and sets and are most commonly used for publishing thumbnails on a web site's albums page. This tutorial will explain how to assign, sort and remove covers.

Default covers

Koken automatically assigns as covers the first three images added to an album. Set covers are automatically assigned using the primary covers of the albums they contain. Koken enforces this three cover minimum to support site themes that display multiple covers. If an image assigned as a cover is removed from an album or deleted, Koken will automatically select a different image to maintain its three cover minimum. You may assign however many cover images you need.

Viewing covers

Assigned covers appear at the top of the right "Inspector" panel when an album or set is selected in the left column (see below). The order in which the covers appear (from left to right) is the order in which they display when multiple covers are published in a site theme. The first cover is "primary" and is used when a theme displays only a single cover for a collection.

Ordering covers

Drag and drop the images at the top of the Inspector panel into your preferred order. When an image is moved to first position (top left) that image becomes the primary cover for the album or set.

Ordering covers

Assigning covers to albums

In order for an image to be assigned as an album cover it must be part of the album. Once the image has been added, there are three methods for cover assignment:

Drag image onto album title

Click, hold, and drag an image from inside an album onto the same album's title in the left column.

Assign cover through title

Edit menu

Select an image inside an album by clicking on it, then open the "Edit" menu above and select "Mark as cover" (see below).

Assign cover through edit menu

Drag image into panel

Click-hold-and-drag an album image into the "Covers" section at the top of the Inspector column. When released the image will be assigned as the album's primary cover.

Assign cover by drag and drop in panel

Assigning covers to sets

Set covers are assigned by dragging and dropping images from the middle column onto set titles in the left column. An image must be included in an album that is a part of the set in order for it to be assigned. For example, in the image below we assign an image from the "India" album to its parent set "Travel".

Assign set cover

Because someone might accidentally drag/drop an image onto a set thinking it's an album, Koken will ask if you'd like to assign the image as the set's cover. Click "Yes" as shown below:

Set cover confirmation

When complete the image will be assigned as the set's cover.

Removing covers from albums

When an album contains more than three covers you may remove the additional covers in the following ways:

Click cover badges

As shown earlier, images assigned as covers have small badges in their lower-left corner. Clicking a badge will unmark the image as an album cover.

Inspector panel

Hover over the cover images at the top of the Inspector panel. If more than three covers are assigned a small "x" will appear at top-right. Click the "x" to remove the cover.

Cover remove

Edit menu

Similar to assigning covers, you may also use the Edit menu to remove covers. To do so, select an image by clicking it, then choose "Unmark as cover" from the Edit menu.

Removing covers from sets

Covers may be removed from sets through the Inspector panel only. Click on a set's title in the left column, then (as shown above with albums) hover over the cover you want to remove and click the "x" at top right.

Replacing covers

If you are unable to remove covers because the minimum number of covers (3) is currently assigned, you may remove the current covers by assigning additional covers then removing the covers you don't want. For example, if you wanted to replace all three covers, add three new ones then remove the others per the instructions above.
