Adding social media metadata and share links

If you're going to the trouble of designing a theme, chances are you want it to be seen. This article contains tips and example code to help optimize and enhance your theme for social media.

Social media metadata

Open Graph meta tags aren't just a Facebook thing anymore. Twitter uses them, as does Pinterest and Google+. These metadata tags go beyond standard HTML tags to provide more extensive information about your site and individual pages.

Twitter also offers Twitter Cards, which are perfect for displaying images, videos and albums published by Koken.

To integrate social media metadata into your theme, look no further than the code linked below. It includes suggested social media markup you can copy/paste into each Koken template.

Social media links

Metadata is only half the story. In order to get your albums, essays, images and videos onto social media platforms you need share links on content pages. Sorry to say, but we took all the fun out of this for you too by providing boilerplate code for Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Google+. Use this as a baseline for your link markup and style however you please.
